On March 20, over 200 students at Lafayette Elementary created Glove-a-phones—simple wind instruments made from household materials—with guidance from MELODY Music Outreach, a nonprofit that introduces children to music at an early age through engaging, hands-on experiences.
To deepen their understanding, participants also observed demonstrations using a speaker-driven oscillator, which made standing waves both audible and visible. Through this, they explored the relationship between wavelength and frequency, seeing firsthand how changes in one affect the other.
Programs like this reflect MELODY’s broader mission to make music more accessible, spark lasting interest in instrumental learning, and build bridges between science education and artistic exploration.
